You can walk, jog or cycle on this path. Along the way, you can see extensive views up and down the Tāmaki River, layers of ash, peat and ignimbrite, wetland areas, and features of historic and cultural significance. Bicycles are permitted but need to share the walkway with pedestrians.

A 5 km walk around the lake is not strenuous and worth the journey with breaks taken at lookouts along the way many with seats. We were looking forward to hearing the song of the bird life but unfortunately it was constantly drowned out by jet skis and outboards towing skiers and biscuits . The walkway is on Lake Rotorangi’s southern shores, crossing a dam and spillway to lush forest. The Lake Rotokare Walkway is a 4 km walking track that circles the lake. The first 600 metres feature boardwalks around the wetlands, which include a boardwalk out to a floating viewing pontoon.

What a place. The reserve is completely contrasting to the surrounding farmland.

The boardwalk up until the pontoon is wheelchair accessible, and many visitors only walk as far as the pontoon and then return. Great place, clean facilities and the walk around the lake is highly recommended. Stayed 2 nights during a normal working week so it was very quiet and peaceful during the day. Unfortunately, between 5 and 8 each evening 2-3 jetskis would hoon around the lake before packing up and returning the site to a calm oasis.
